What is Tawakkul تَوَكُّل

Entrusting oneself (on someone else).

What is تَوَكُّلٌ عَلَى اللّٰهِ

Entrusting oneself (with absolute reliance) on ALLĀH.

What is the meaning of Wakīl وَكِيل

When used for ALLĀH

The Ever Reliable, Trustworthy, Disposer of affairs. (The One entrusted with all matters, regardless of whether the creation acknowledges this fact or not).

When used for creation

One relied upon and entrusted with a specific matter (usually acting on behalf of another in that matter).

Why تَوَكُّلٌ عَلَى اللّٰهِ is the intelligent and logical choice after understanding the ground realities and facts mentioned in The Qurʾān

It suffices with ALLĀH as Wakīl

وَتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى اللّٰهِۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِاللّٰهِ وَكِیلࣰا ۝٣

And entrust yourself (with absolute reliance) on ALLĀH, and suffices with ALLĀH as Wakīl1. (Translation attempt for The Qurʾān 33:3)

1: Wakīl When used for ALLĀH: The Ever Reliable, Trustworthy, Disposer of affairs. (The One entrusted with all matters, regardless of whether the creation acknowledges this fact or not).

اَللّٰهُ خَـٰلِقُ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲۖ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَیۡءࣲ وَكِیلࣱ ۝٦٢

ALLĀH is Creator of every thing, and He is over every thing, Wakīl1. (Translation attempt for The Qurʾān 39:62)

1: Wakīl When used for ALLĀH: The Ever Reliable, Trustworthy, Disposer of affairs. (The One entrusted with all matters, regardless of whether the creation acknowledges this fact or not).

Only what ALLĀH has Written for us, and Permits for us can befall us and He is our Mawlā, and there is no point in grieving over what escapes us, nor in exulting over what ALLĀH Gives us

قُل لَّن يُّصِيبَنَاۤ إِلَّا مَا كَتَبَ اللّٰهُ لَنَا هُوَ مَوۡلَىٰنَاۚ وَعَلَى اللّٰهِ فَلۡیَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝٥١

Say, never will befall1 us except what ALLĀH has Written2 for us, He is our Mawlā3, and on ALLĀH then are to entrust themselves (with absolute reliance), the believers. (Translation attempt for The Qurʾān 9:51)

1: ص و ب : Arrival at a due target — whether physical (an object striking its mark), existential (an event befalling a person), or abstract (a statement hitting the truth).

2: ك ت ب : Fixation, binding and attachment of what is intended, planned or decided, with precision and strength, in the practical domain with appropriate means.
OR
Fixation, binding and attachment of what is, should be, or is bound to be, with precision and strength, in the practical domain with appropriate means (through writing, recording or documenting, legal or Divine prescription, or Divine decree).

3: مَوۡلَىٰ : One designated within a relationship of closeness involving the looking after of someone or their interests or affairs — whether as the one performing that role, the one receiving it, or one so positioned. Here, ALLĀH is the One Who Looks after.

Does not befall any befaller in the earth, nor within yourselves, except that it is in a Book before We Bring it into existence. Indeed that on ALLĀH is easy. So that you(pl) do not grieve over what has escaped you(pl), nor exult in what He has given you(pl) and ALLĀH does not love any boastful self-fantasizer. (Translation attempt for The Qurʾān 57:22-23)

مَاۤ أَصَابَ مِن مُّصِیبَةٍ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ اللّٰهِۗ وَمَن یُؤۡمِنۢ بِاللّٰهِ یَهۡدِ قَلۡبَهُۥۚ وَاللّٰهُ بِكُلِّ شَیۡءٍ عَلِیمࣱ ۝١١

Does not befall any befaller except with Permission of ALLĀH and whoever believes in ALLĀH, He Guides his heart, and ALLĀH is with reference to every thing Ever All-Knowing. (Translation attempt for The Qurʾān 64:11)

No need to have any fear or worry about death, because death can only come with the Permission and Decision of ALLĀH, for which the time and place has been Decided already by ALLĀH

… Say, were it that you(pl) happened to be in your houses, definitely would have come forth, the ones whom, written over them was the killing, to their laying-stops, and for ALLĀH putting to test what is in your(pl) chests and for Refining what is in your(pl) hearts and ALLĀH is Ever All-Knowing of that which is of the chests. (Translation attempt for Words from The Qurʾān 3:154)

وَمَا كَانَ لِنَفۡسٍ أَن تَمُوتَ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ اللّٰهِ كِتَـٰبࣰا مُّؤَجَّلࣰاۗ

And it cannot be for a self that it dies, except with Permission of ALLĀH — a term appointed writ … (Translation attempt for Words from The Qurʾān 3:145)

ALLĀH is our sufficiency

وَمَن يَّتَوَكَّلۡ عَلَى اللّٰهِ فَهُوَ حَسۡبُهُۥۤۚ

… and whoever entrusts himself (with absolute reliance) on ALLĀH, then He is his sufficiency … (Translation attempt for Words from The Qurʾān 65:3)

ٱلَّذِینَ قَالَ لَهُمُ ٱلنَّاسُ إِنَّ ٱلنَّاسَ قَدۡ جَمَعُوا۟ لَكُمۡ فَٱخۡشَوۡهُمۡ فَزَادَهُمۡ إِیمَـٰنࣰا وَقَالُوا۟ حَسۡبُنَا اللّٰهُ وَنِعۡمَ ٱلۡوَكِیلُ ۝١٧٣

The ones who, said to them the people, indeed the people have already gathered for you, so be apprehensive of them, so it increased them in belief and they said, Our Sufficiency is ALLĀH and Gracious and Excellent1 The Wakīl2. (Translation attempt for Words from The Qurʾān 3:173)

1: نِعۡمَ translated here as “Gracious and Excellent.”

The Arabic term نِعۡمَ is treated as a noun (in line with the Kufan grammatical view). Its root ن ع م conveys meanings associated with ease, well-being, pleasantness, and favorable condition — i.e., a state characterized by comfort and benefit.

When used in the Qurʾānic formula of praise, it functions as a declarative expression commending the subject as worthy of admiration and praise. When attributed to ALLĀH, it identifies Him as the Perfect Source and Bestower of such favor, ease, comfort and well-being.

The translation “Gracious” is included, when the word is used for ALLĀH to reflect the sense of beneficent granting of favor, ease, comfort etc. associated with the root, while “Excellent” conveys the evaluative praise conveyed by the expression. This rendering aims to preserve both the root-based semantic field and the function of commendation, without conflating it with other roots such as خ ي ر (general goodness) or ب ر ك (blessing with increase and stability).

2: Wakīl When used for ALLĀH: The Ever Reliable, Trustworthy, Disposer of affairs. (The One entrusted with all matters, regardless of whether the creation acknowledges this fact or not).

If ALLĀH Helps you, no one can overcome you

إِن يَّنۡصُرۡكُمُ اللّٰهُ فَلَا غَالِبَ لَكُمۡۖ وَإِن يَّخۡذُلۡكُمۡ فَمَن ذَا ٱلَّذِی یَنصُرُكُم مِّنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦۗ وَعَلَى اللّٰهِ فَلۡیَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ ۝١٦٠

If ALLĀH Helps you(pl), then there is no overcomer for you(pl), and if He Forsakes you(pl), then who is that, the one who helps you(pl) after Him, and on ALLĀH then, are to entrust themselves (with absolute reliance), the believers. (Translation attempt for The Qurʾān 3:160)

Important Clarification

If there is anything correct and useful in this post, it is only due to ALLĀH’s Guidance, and if there is any kind of mistake or shortcoming, it is due to me, an ordinary slave of ALLĀH. Exact translation is not possible for ordinary texts, and this is The Word of ALLĀH, on which more caution is required, and writing translation alone is inaccurate and wrong. That is why I write translation attempt and not translation, no matter how hard I try to translate as accurately, literally and faithfully as I can.
